PCE PROFESSIONAL CHARTERED ENGINEERS NEWSLETTER 2008No8UAE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES GROUP(PCE UAE) Check web: www.pceuae.netWe welcome all UAE based Registrants of the Engineering Council (EC) qualified CEng, IEng and EngT plus all other members of the 35 EC licensed Professional Engineering Institutions (PEI) who have formally confirmed their support for PCE UAE aims.... These aims include increasing awareness of EC and individual PEI and their respective corporate standards and qualifications. Also, support members of PEI having limited representation in the country.& encourage registration, participation & programme proposals.. . Potential membership has doubled to over 2000 since PCE UAE was founded effective 1996 01 01 led by ICE, IMechE & others..We meet in Abu Dhabi and Dubai on the 1st and 2nd Tuesday of each month with a related visit on the 3rd Tuesday and at Ghantout on the last Tuesday for Professional Review Preparation (PRP) for Graduates & others subject to demand & HonSec registration......Dear ColleagueIntroduction - This is a short post-holiday NEWSLETTER to let you know that meetings arranged by our Programme Member were well attended in August and so far this month of September, our two meetings in Abu Dhabi and Dubai have had over seventy participants, some driving between the two main venues as the speaker Gary Beamish gave different presentation topics at both centres.Participants – What was of particular interest was the mix of nationalities and disciplines represented by those attending this month – over 10 of each. We had colleagues from Britain, France, Germany, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Russia, Philipines, India, Sudan and Ghana but regrettably none from UAE. Also represented were EC registrants plus PEI members from ICE, IMechE, IET, IChemE plus IStructE, CIWEM, IHT, and also CEnv, Architecture and a Solicitor Of the countries represented above I am fortunate to have worked in six. Broadening the numbers to include those visited for work and vacation I have clocked up over 50. I read this week that the Scots national beverage was already available in 170 countries before Coca Cola even started marketing!Recent Presentations - The topics in September were both related to management and contract conditions. Numbers attending were more than expected so we have arranged that those who did not receive copies of prepared handouts and wish one should e-mail the PCE UAE HonSec direct with the request. Also, check the web as we may well load the data on www.pceuae.net.Future Topics & IChemE– Gary and others have kindly offered to give presentations or seminars on other topics including Management, Contract, Personal Skills etc which were mentioned at the meetings. Also outlined were proposals for others primarily related to EC requirements and those specifically for IChemE as a key PEI. While on holiday I had the pleasure of meeting the IChemE Marketing Executive for Scotland. She arranges Presentations and courses including Why Chartered? through to Chartered Professional Review, Mentoring and Interviewing etc. It so happens she will be in UAE later this year. Subject to interest and agreement with IChemE PCE UAE could arrange seminars for members.Feedback - For such seminars we require feedback as to potential demand and appropriate timing. When a Saturday was suggested one person understandably said he sought a rest at the weekend while another said he would prefer the Saturday. Our Hon Sec pointed out that PCE UAE had arranged a weekend seminar mainly for IStructE members for a Friday AND Saturday – 10-15 were expected but over 30 attended. One proposal was to have (on a Saturday).a seminar at Ghantout for PRP in the forenoon with a presentation on Mentoring or Interviewing for CPR in the afternoon. A light lunch between would allow for networking and potential mentor support. Please e-mail PCE UAE HonSec with ideas & comments.Earlier Seminars - Members attending were interested to see copies of binders and notes issued at Seminars organised by PCE UAE in 1999 when we arranged two days in Abu Dhabi and two in Dubai with speakers flown out from UK presenting full day courses on ‘Partnering’ and ‘NEC Engineering and Construction Contract Conditions'. These were run on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 1999 05 23, 24, 25, 26. and could be repeated for these or other topics subject to PCE UAE receiving some financial support from PEI in UK and from corporate sponsorship initiated by committee & members....Photographs – As said above, the first two meetings in August resulted in ‘Standing room only’ as many turned up without registering with the HonSec. We were better prepared for September when 70 turned up – again many not registering. Attached are some photographs from these recent meetings.Check web and register with HonSec for future meetings and topics.Regards, Alister Friday 2008 09 12AIM Er Alister I M Macmillan BSc, CEng, FIBMC, FICE, FIMechE, FIET, MUAESEProfessional Business Management Consultant & Chartered EngineerChair- Professional Chartered Engineers United Arab International Group (PCE UAE)PO Box 44891, Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Emirate, United Arab Emirates (UAE)Tel: 02-584 3187 Mob: 050-445 1879 e-mail: macmilan@eim.ae
