Additional information and explanation of abbreviations can be found in or via the PCE UAE web site at www.pceuae.net. The speaker will bring us up to date with recent and pending developments.The British Based Engineering Council (EC) licenses 35 Professional Engineering Institutions (PEI) through which members can qualify as CEng, IEng or EngT/EngTech and has 12 Professional Affiliates (PA). The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) is one of the key PEI. with over 22000 members in 105 countries. Of the 2000 potential mebmers of PCE UAE 200 are members of IStructE of these 110 are EC Registered CEng, 3 are IEng and nil EngT/Tech. IStructE was founded in London 1908 07 21 as the ‘Concrete Institute’ and renamed IStructE in 1922 and gained its Royal Charter in 1934 by which time membership had increased to around 3000. Since then it has grown to 8500 in 1960, 14000 by 1980 and 22000 today with 32 Branches, Divisions and Sections across the world including involvement with PCE UAE.IStructE is thus a key PEI linked closely to other PEI by virtue of members having multi-discipline memberships. The 88th and current President of IStructE is Sarah Buck BSc(Hons), CEng, FIStructE She started her career with Freeman Fox, set up her own consultancy in 1993 and co-founded BSW Consulting in 1996. She was the first woman Council Member and is now the first Female President of IStructE. Mike W Fordyce BSc, MEng, CPEng, FIStructE, FIEAust visited UAE and addressed members at Ghantout in 2006....SPEAKER PROFILEKeith Eaton is current Chief Executive of IStructE. He has 42 years experience in structural and civil engineering, and was involved in projects in the UK and around the world. He gained his university degrees at Birmingham University and University College, London. He read Civil Engineering for his Bachelors Degree and Structural Engineering for his Doctorate – his thesis being ‘Wind loading on tall buildings.’ For much of his career he has been concerned with research, with the practical application of the research to design and construction problems, and with the drafting of standards, codes and other guidance for engineers and architects. While working at the Building Research Establishment (BRE) he developed gained considerable knowledge and experience in wind and earthquake engineering matters.From 1989 with the Steel Construction Institute (SCI) as Deputy Director he was involved with many research, education and construction applications. In 1994 he created a new Environment Division at SCI , leading a major initiative investigating environmental and sustainability issues in the steel construction industry. He also led SCI incolvement with the Egan Task Force initiative “Rethinking Construction” Since 1999, Keith has been Chief Executive of IStructE. He is the Institution’s lead contact with governments, with the Engineering Council, and the UK Construction Industry Council and registration of competent structural engineers globally (particularly in SE Asia, the Middle East and North America). He is a director of Structural Engineers Registration Ltd.
